Substance-use disorders (SUD) are disorders in which mild, moderate, or severe use of one or more substances impairs functioning. Alcohol-use disorder (AUD) is a form of SUD in which alcohol is the primary substance used (see SAMHSA).

When addressing the topic of SUDs, we use person-centered language, which removes stigmatizing language and separates an individual from a diagnosis. For example, instead of referring to a person as an “addict” or “substance abuser,” it is better to say “person with a substance use disorder.” For more information on the language of SUDs, see NIDA.
